I teach English to accounting students at Kaifeng University in Henan Province.? I'm there for 6 week stints, which gives me time to work on my writing the rest of the year. SV

Jasminka and I both agreed on this haiku by Steve Addiss for First Best of Issue. Our reasons perhaps were different for choosing it so we are both doing write-ups to compare. I liked this one because of the fantastic visuals of "the sun" literally pulling swallows right "from the ocean," as well as the juxtaposition of the outgoing tide and the sun. All in all, just a very well-written haiku moment.- an'ya

Yes, this is an image where reality interweaves with illusion, by no means reducing its value but, on the contrary, adding to the quality of this excellent haiku. What in nature is the most beautiful seems to be the simplest, which is just the case with this poem. The sun seems to play with swallows. The moment I'd gladly record with my camera if the opportunity arose.-Jasminka

BEST OF ISSUE (Second Choice)
Najbolji haiku broja (drugoplasirani)

P. K. Padhy, India (Indija)

flight of cranes—
bridging the sea
with the sky

let ždralova –
premošćuje more
i nebo
tr. SV

Again, Jasminka and I both agreed on this haiku for Second Best of Issue. And again, I liked it for the visuals it presents of a whole "flight of cranes" bridging the sea "with the sky" . . . it was a difficult choice between first and second place for these haiku are actually similar, not in subject matter necessarily albeit they are both about the ocean/sea, but in the way they are both very well-written.- an'ya

Only at the first glance it appears that we have selected two "identical" images for First and Second Best of Issue. Although both haiku are really well-written, it could be noticed that this one by P. K. Padhy is about quite different experience, different dynamics. This image is almost static, as if the cranes, with their wings spread wide, are here to only complete the vision of the bridge before the observer's eyes. The experience of the sun as part of the image is missing, the haiku moment does not strictly indicate the time of the day; the order of Best of Issue is completely justified.-Jasminka

- an'ya

BEST OF ISSUE (Third Choice)
Najbolji haiku broja (trećeplasirani)

Rosa Clement, Brazil

colheita de laranja
o trem que passa leva
um cheiro doce

orange harvest
the passing train loads
a sweet scent
branje narandži
voz u prolazu tovari
sladak miris
tr. SV

And for the third time, we both agreed on this haiku by Rosa Clement from Brazil for Third Best of Issue and it was difficult to not choose it for first or second! since all of these Best of Issue are such well-written moments. First in line 1, we see the orange harvest, then in line two the author allows us to see the passing train, and in line three, we smell the scent being carried away.- an'ya

What would one give to be in such an environment! The haiku has been written in such a way that even to the reader, miles away from the scene, the image is quite familiar, as something he has already experienced and tasted. The harvest locates the image in time, while the train is here "fortunately" in passing to add an additional dimension to the whole image as if it is spreading around the sweet scent of the freshly picked oranges, which anyway spreads through the whole orchard and beyond during the harvest.

- an'ya

Lancaster St.
Athens, OH 45701
United States
rkelly09@jcu.edu
1-(216)-213-3129

What is most remarkable about P.K. Padhy’s poetry is his ability to express so much by saying so little. The Tiny Pebbles exhibits his aphoristic style, in which he succinctly captures both the beauty and grace of everyday life and the socioeconomic injustices suffered by the oppressed and underprivileged. For example, “Budding Value” and “Rain” portray nature as a cyclical and perpetual provider and describe the way in which it replenishes the human spirit while simultaneously existing outside the power of finite beings. “Street Man,” “Slogan,” and “Metro Life” subtly note the cold impersonality of city life, showing the way that its daily tribulations can weigh on the souls of the individual, and as a result, of the community. “Child Laborer” and “Hygienic Ostentation” emphasize the overwhelming power of a person’s ascribed status to inhibit upward mobility and to stunt proper emotional growth.
In poems like “Injustice,” “Humanism,” and “Life,” Padhy seeks to complete the age-old task of the poet: giving abstract ideas a concrete face. The word “injustice” becomes odorous, palpable, and altogether more real as a shattered bottle of milk lying at someone’s doorstep. The word “life” both begins to delight and repulse the eyes when people transform into hungry crows being thrown crumbs as alms on the street. The philosophy of “humanism” stops being simply a way of thought when it is described as the rhythmic beat that eternally pulsates through the roots of the human forest.
Aphorisms often exist as adages, expressing general truths about life gained from years of wisdom in hopes of instructing people towards humility, generosity, and moderate lifestyles. The writer of an aphorism sometimes assumes the stance of a preacher at the pulpit, but not in the case of Padhy. While some of his poems do contain gems of advice, he is far from a didactic writer. Although his poems may be interpreted as political or partisan, I believe such readings would be misguided. Rather than a campaigner, Padhy is a reporter, or recorder, who paints the landscape of suffering as he sees it and takes snapshots for a scrapbook of the human condition. Each poem is an open-ended and stand-alone strain of Padhy himself, allowing for a wide variety of reactions from readers daring enough to face an examination of their conscience.

*Ryan Kelly is an American teacher, writer, and editor who was born in Cleveland, Ohio. He currently lives and learns in the small town of Athens, Ohio, where he works as a member of Ohio University’s English Department.

<img style="display:block; margin:0px auto 10px; text-align:center;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 400px; height: 303px;" src="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/-ZEqLHVLFwZQ/TZE9DaJlRpI/AAAAAAAAACo/1Aon8acE2Qk/s400/PKP_coverpage.jpg" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5589315741311911570" />

The Houston Literary Review

Some of my shorter verses have been published in The Houston Literary Review, December, 2010 Issue (Page 12-13). …… ..…..

Sometimes I fear
As if I am left alone
In a world quite unknown.
I wish solemnly
In every tomorrow
You live with me.
Else I would melt away
In the burning grief.

……. ………. …….

Your angel of eyes
Steals me beyond
The brims of passion.
Your moistened lips
Dip me
In the abyssal sea of quest.
Pearls of love I collect
Enticing in the sacred voice.

……. ………. …….

On your lap,
With much love and care,
I drenched on the moisten layers.
Lazily closing my eyes
I kiss the Craftsman’s choice:
So sacred
In the evolution memoirs.

…. ….. …………..

You whisper
In my ear
Sharing your desire
Over the shadows
Of translucent light.
After a long journey
You relax for a while
Unveiling the curtain
Of your dream.

……. …… ……

I could read
Your language
When your dark skin
Shades light of love.
Your ambiance
Makes me rich
At the touch of your
Tender close reach.

…… ……. ……..

Slowly you sail
With shades of shyness
And carefully I unveil
The miracle of union.
Nearing to the Moon
I take a fly
When you clad me
With your divinely kiss
In the celestial sky.

…. ….. ……

Your moisten lips
Bathe me in the
Soulful sizzling rain.
Thick layers of your hair
Paint the beauty of darkness
As smile rhymes
On your bashful lips.
Your budding eyes
Sail me
Far beyond
The touch of the sea.

…… ….. ….

You stretch to touch
The clouds
And the new born rains.
We enlighten
Our living dream
Behind the lusty lightning.

…… ….. ….

We discover
The agile ray of radiance
Playfully closing our eyes.
Perhaps darkness
Emits new streak of beam,
In the world
Of our celestial dream.

….. ….. …….

On the ripples of your
Silken hair
My dream silently streams.
Grains of sweetness
The morning wind sprinkles.
The muse of your wishes
Reminds me
The last night dream
Back again.

…. ….. …….

You feel a change
In yourself.
The pleasure
You whisper,
And desire a lot
To your taste.
The silken past moistens
My memory at the best.

…. …… ……

We see each other much
Closing our eyes, and
Our souls listen
To each others voice.
Bliss spreads its wings
As echo listens
To the voice of silence.
I can say
It is the angle of image,
Meandering in my
Better half’s pair of eyes.
For the space of freedom
Evolution fulfills its wish.
…. ……… …….

Your budding eyes
Hide me behind
The touch of the sea.
Thrilling gathers in your eyes
As you climb to the peak.
My urge encircles
And the warmth melts
The flow of time.
You respite for a moment
Before painting another journey.

……. …… ……

In the later days
You decide to go
To the place of your
Own.
I circulate you
Like wind every where.
As patches of cloud
Memory sails around.
I wish to read
Your absence
As the distance
Travels a poem.

……. …… ……

In kitchen, here and there
I feel
You are all along.
When I turn aside
I find
Behind the shadow
You hide.
I see your paintings
And finger prints
Echoing your remote voice
In the corner
Of your absence.

…. ……. ……..

As a lazy shadow
You hide
When I
Turn aside.
I heard
The rhythm of silence.
Suddenly I find you
Whispering
Behind the colours
Of your paintings.

…. ……. ……..

In loneliness
You accompany me
As fragrance of memory.
Your image lives with me
As music
With the rhyme.

……. …….. ……..

Somewhere I feel
The absence.
As days and nights
Rush to reside
In the album pages.
I figure you
In your closeness
Till I arrest my shadow
In your virtual presence.

…. ….. …….

The letter you sail,
From the other side
Of the bank,
Brings a fresh breeze
Of remembrance.
Phrases and words
Shorten the distance
Composing
A different closeness.

…. …….. ……

Glad to know you are
All fine there.
I recall back
Sitting on the cradle
Amidst hushed silence.

…. …….. ……

Memories recall the warmth
Of the morning sun
And some times
Breeze the nostalgic moments
On the wings
Of colourful monsoon

…. …….. ……

I sit calmly
Contouring
The hills of aspiration
With my living painting.
In no time
My eyelids slide
On your glacial face,
Embodying joyful flowers
Of warm smiles.

….. …… ……

I sketch
My imagination
Living in an
Aspirant grain and
Awaiting a warm touch
Of the sizzling soft rains.

……. ……. ……

Please convey our best wishes
To the New soul:
The Designer’s gift.
Hope close to you she listens
The lyrics
Of the evolutionary waves.

…. …. ……..

A baby is born
To us
In the form of a tiny bud.
Soon the aroma sketches
The aspiration edge
Of our felicitous image.
Love, an act of creation,
Symbolises
The glow of the bright sun.

…. ……. …….

Your face,
Like milky Moon,
Smiles with
Eyes swinging
Like busy bees
And lips gathering
The meaning of expression:
Your womanhood
A gateway
To another new poem.

……. ……. …….

We climb many heights
Embodying soul to soul.
Our love,
In your richness valley,
Silently brims
As the imprint
Becomes awaken
Like a tender leaf.

……. ……. …….

You assimilate love
Once more
For a noble cause,<br animals.
You promise them
Stars and Moon to visit.
They repose sacred dreams
On your warmth touch
In every night.

……. ……. …….

The kids express
The meaning of affection
And Craftsman’s bliss.
Love sublimates
In their innocent
Smiles and musical voice.

……. ……. …….

We mirrored ourselves
Reminiscing
Our holy parents.
Flowers of love
Confer together
Weaving the generation link.

……. ……. …….

They clasp their hands to catch
The butterflies
Twitter with birds flying high
We discover
The morphology of feeling,
The dimension of affection
And the edge of fulfillment
In their innocent smile.
Their twisted talk
Bears a different verse
Imaging the sonnets of love
The purpose of life echoes back
Traveling all the distance from the sky.

……. ……. …….

They playfully toddle
the parents shoes unfitting to theirs.
Colourful scratches on the wall
Craft paintings of new imagination.<br mind.
With beauty and bliss
It is more to
A celestial journey indeed.

…. ….. …….

Time transgresses over the
Wealthy age.
Lamp of love
Still continues to burn
Behind the eagerness
Of wrinkles.
Richness of affection resides
With zest of our gray hairs.
Perhaps time tries
To harbour us
On the bank of eternal solace.

……. …….. …….

Life is a wave of
Shades of joys and sorrows.
Harmonically it swings
In the highs and lows.
I collect the grains of hope
By the sides of the completeness.
Wish the waves of our creation
Would breathe the zest of life
For the longest time.

…. …….. …….
In between the
Intimate banks.
…. …….. …….

Memories are preserved
In the tiny pebbles
Of the meandering flows.
Songs of love scintillate
On the colourful edge
Of the living space.
The caring warmth of our creation
Nurture us to rest
In the rest of our evenings.

….. ……. …….

Our love is a ceaseless
Melodious celebration
Our love is the lamp
And we are its brightness
Our love is a song
And we are its rhythm.
Our journey is an extension
Of the boundless voyage.
….. ……. …….

We walk down the
Garden of life
Reminiscing the poetic sublime.
Wind whispers and river rhymes,
All the songs
Of our poetic flight.
The warmth rejoice
Of the sacred celebration
Carrying the nostalgic memories and
Reaching out to the sun
Of a new light
In the open charm and<br At an early age in schooling I reminisce searching the pearl of words like artist painting with his brush and shading rainbow of colours. I sent some of my poems, initially written in my mother tongue, to the editor. To my surprise I saw these poems appeared on the wall magazine of the hostel. I carefully sheltered my belief and conformed with hesitation whether was the same handwritten poem I composed, when I was a student of intermediate science, sitting on my old wooden chair. The words were tied with the amalgamated thread of natural beauty and social fabrics. It gave me immense pleasure. I once again glanced over it while returning from the dining room. “It is nice you have some inclination towards literature”, my friends and seniors complimented.
I remember my first poem appeared in print in the “SCOLOMANICA”. The titled “Poems” read as
“We are born to live
We live to love
We love to win
And we win not to come again…..
Love is the legend of life
It has no shape, size of its own
It is as pure as milk
and is as soft as the Himalayan snow….”.
To date I still preserve the little magazine with large care. Indeed it has been a great pleasure rendering birth to a creation in the form art, poetry or dance. Often I wonder all these artistic manifestations reflect one’s inner recess in a scientific style. When I share my writing with my friends and read out with aesthetic voice, I feel a great solace. Like a bird I carefully pick the words, rearrange them to a meaningful silhouette. Quite often I feel delivering some thing to the society through the treasure of words means some value.
Poetically we can interpret science and conventionally it fathoms a lot of reasoning. The realignment of voice tracks a path of transmission and it scintillates differently to become more understandable. Perhaps it migrates some messages through the language interweaved with new phrases with hopes lingering to aspire. To place it more candidly here is one of my poems, “How Beautiful…” published long ago, in the Indian Express:

If birds could talk
trees could walk with us
flowers could express their
cause of smile
spring could speak its desire
and meaning of songs to the rocks
waves could stop for a while
so that we could have some words with them
silence could spell out its
aim of being a saint
past could return and
open its petals afresh
graveyard could woke up
after the sun rise
and chat with us.
It emanates a scientific and social eagerness. The modern science, with all possibility, is deemed to revolutionize into platform of reality. When we see a flower or any natural thing, we sublimate poetically the beauty embedded in it. We celebrate it as art. The science unveils these in the form of chemistry of colour and physics of light. The journey of literature rendezvous with social culture and creative scientific milieu. I got an opportunity to deliver a point on this in a wide gathering of a school. Poetry is the essence of human urge and awareness. The mystic of art and literature delightfully reveals the kaleidoscope of science through colorful flair of human aspiration. It amalgamates the spiritual romanticism and intellectual cadence of human beings in the perennial journey along the corridor of nature’s panorama of blissful beauty.

Poetry is a stream murmuring our emotional songs all through its journey. Life is a boat sailing on the ripples of art and literature. Science is the composite reflection, Poetry is its genetic soul. Let us put poetry to thrive in time and anti time, in matter and anti matter. Let it speak out the truth of human life.

About Me

Brief Professional Career:

Professionally a petroleum Geologist, presently holding a senior executive position in Oil And Natural Gas Corporation (ONGC).
